meaning behind uis

Updated: Sep 29, 2019

The idea behind union in speech is for us to come together to share our voices and be heard, as I touched on in the last blog but there is more to that. When reading union in speech as uis it’s the notion that ‘i’ (being you) can be yourself while united with people, hence the ‘us’. So uis represents being proud of ourselves and our stories and having the strength to come together to share those stories and learn from each other.

So, I created a series of short poems to define union in speech.

u = Together we are free. Together we are strong. Together we are united.

i = I, you, him, her, they. You are a beautiful, powerful, independent human being.

s = We are one. Together we are the world, but united we are the future.

Poetry, spoken word and speech are all forms of expression that are unique in their own way. That is why I wanted to be inclusive and not restrict uis to one form of art, but all speech-related ones. I believe that using our voice to share our opinions, beliefs, passions, stories is very important for growth as a community because the more we express ourselves the more changes can be made.
